Randy & Maria Wallace and Family

Randy and Maria Wallace come from very different backgrounds, but they share a big dream of homeownership.  This April, Randy, Maria, and their children will see that dream materialize in the shadow of the State Capitol. Volunteers from banks across Iowa will join the Wallaces to build their brand new home.

Maria came from San Louis Potosi, Mexico, four years ago to join several of her family members, including a brother.  That visit led to her decision to immigrate to the United States and be closer to her brother and his family.  Maria is thankful for her new life in Des Moines and the opportunities here.  Once she has purchased her Habitat house, her next goal is to become a naturalized U.S. citizen.

Randy has worked for the Department of Administrative Services (DAS) at the State Capitol Complex as a custodian for 10 years.  He also holds a part-time job at Iowa Health Systems to help support his family.  When he’s not working, he spends his time with daughters Vivianna (2), Maria (10) and Jennifer (18).  He has had some setbacks, but Randy did not want his children moving from apartment to apartment.  His goal has been to provide his family with the stability and security of their own home.

Maria’s brother, Roberto, purchased a Habitat home more than a year ago, and persuaded his sister’s family to apply for this self-help program.  With their Habitat partnership, they are well on the way to making a dream come true. The required sweat equity part of their program has been ‘a priceless learning experience.’  They’ve learned important home maintenance and construction skills, met a variety of volunteers, sponsors, and fellow Habitat homeowners, and completed extensive financial education courses.

Randy is certain that he’s well prepared to be a successful homeowner because of Habitat’s guidance, training, and support.  He says, “I want this dream for my family!”
