"Homeownership is more than just a symbol of the American dream; it is an important part of our way of life. Core American values of individuality, thrift, responsibility and self-reliance are embodied in homeownership."

-President George Bush

"It feels great to set and achieve a goal as a family. We are proud of our accomplishment and very thankful to the Des Moines Habitat for Humanity family."

-Leola Levy and children, Habitat Partner family

"To someone who's never had a home of their own before, a key is precious metal.  It opens more than just a door; it opens up a whole new way of life.  That's why Habitat for Humanity is so close to my heart. ...Everyone deserves a decent, affordable home, and altogether we can make that happen."

-Reba McEntire

Our Partner Families

Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity partners with working families that are economically denied the opportunity for home ownership.  Our families are at or below 50% of the median income for family size in the Des Moines area and cannot afford the security and stability of their own home through traditional means.

Habitat families make application and are reviewed for partnership considering three criteria:

Need: Families must be low income living in inadequate housing and/or cost burdened housing, where their rental costs are greater than 30% of their income.

Ability to pay: The family must demonstrate they can afford the reduced cost of a Habitat home through the no interest payments provided by the Habitat mortgage.

Willingness to partner: Families must demonstrate a willingness to become a full partner in the project.  They will commit to completing 400 hours of 'sweat equity' and must successfully complete the 'Blueprint to Homeownership' course.
