Get excited for the 2010 Women Build women build-small.jpg

In the days leading up to Mother's Day, more than 200 construction crews of women volunteers across the country are pounding nails and raising walls at Habitat for Humanity construction sites in all 50 states in recognition of National Women Build Week, May 1 - 9.  In Des Moines our 3rd Women's Build will kickoff on Wednesday, May 5th with Lowes volunteers building walls for Kim's new home on East 19th Street.   Early this month the Jordan Creek Lowes hosted a framing clinic to prepare volunteers for the build!

Developed through the partnership between Lowe's and Habitat for Humanity, National Women Build Week challenges women to devote one day to the effort to eliminate poverty housing.  The event is an initiative of Habitat for Humanity's Women Build program, underwritten by Lowe's, which recruits, educates and nurtures women to build and advocate for simple, decent and affordable houses in their communities.

Please call the Habitat office at 471-8686 and speak with Amber or Danielle in Volunteer Services to volunteer for this build.

Rock the Block!

"Rock the Block" focuses on the cleanup of a three block area within King Irving and Mondamin Presidential neighborhoods, giving volunteers and homeowners the opportunity to work together on neighborhood Rock the block logo_plain-small.jpgprojects. On Saturday, May 15th during AmeriCorps Week 2010 the neighborhood beautification project will provide volunteer opportunities for landscaping, trimming bushes and trees, planting, small home projects, cleaning, painting, trash pick-up, etc. The morning (8am - Noon) includes a service project to help beautify and assist residents near Evelyn K. Davis Park in Des Moines along 14th Street and Carpenter Avenue.

There will also be a social in the afternoon (Noon-4pm) where neighborhood and Oakridge children and families can participate in fun activities including crafts, games, and music, while learning more about
the AmeriCorps program and opportunities with Habitat for Humanity. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Please call Shelly (sbernholtz@gdmhabitat.org) at 471-8686 with questions or sign-up to volunteer HERE.

Upcoming Home Dedications:

Tina's Family at 1219 15th ST on May 15th at 9:30am
Sharae's Family at 1705 Carpenter on May 15th at 10:30am

Calling all Lutherans!

Your local Thrivent Builds project gives Thrivent members and other Lutheran volunteers a chance to help a local family achieve homeownership.  Construction is about to begin, and we are in need of weekday volunteers--especially on May 26-28 when we're scheduled to start framing the home.  Register for these exciting days of service HERE, or call the Habitat office at 471-8686 and speak with Amber or Danielle in Volunteer Services.

Give Back Des Moines...
